Mapleton, one of North Dakota’s oldest cities, encapsulates the state’s rich history. Settled in 1870 along the Maple River, it was renamed Mapleton in 1875 when its first post office was established. The city experienced the extremes of Midwest life—blizzards, tornadoes, and bonanza farming. During the 1880s, Mapleton thrived amidst the era’s agricultural boom, with settlers like Mary Dodge Woodward documenting the challenges and opportunities of frontier life. By 1884, Mapleton was a bustling hub, outshining even Fargo with its serene, settled atmosphere. Today, Mapleton stands as a testament to resilience and community spirit, cherished for its historical legacy and tranquil charm.
